Scientific Rigor Editorial Independence Research Integrity Transparent Process

Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI) is committed to maintaining a rigorous, fair, transparent, timely, and independent editorial process. All manuscripts are evaluated based on their scientific merit, originality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, clarity of reporting, relevance to the journal's Focus and Scope, and potential contribution to nursing education, nursing science, and evidence-based nursing practice.

Editorial decisions are made independently and are not influenced by authors' institutional affiliation, nationality, professional status, financial considerations, or other factors unrelated to the scholarly quality of the manuscript.

1. Manuscript Submission

Authors must submit manuscripts through the Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI) online submission system and ensure compliance with the journal's Author Guidelines, Focus and Scope, ethical requirements, and manuscript preparation requirements.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all listed authors have approved the manuscript, agreed to its submission, and provided complete and accurate information required by the journal.

Submission of a manuscript to JPKI indicates that the work has not been published previously, except where appropriately disclosed and permitted, and is not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.

2. Administrative and Technical Check

Following submission, the editorial office conducts an initial administrative and technical assessment.

This assessment may include verification of:

  • Completeness of the manuscript and required submission files;
  • Compliance with the journal's Author Guidelines and manuscript structure;
  • Author and affiliation information;
  • Required declarations and statements;
  • Ethical approval and informed consent information, where applicable;
  • Competing interests and funding declarations;
  • Compliance with relevant reporting guidelines;
  • Reference and citation requirements; and
  • Other technical or editorial requirements established by JPKI.

Manuscripts that do not meet the journal's basic submission requirements may be returned to the authors for technical correction before proceeding to scientific editorial assessment.

3. Initial Editorial Screening

Manuscripts that pass the administrative and technical check undergo an initial editorial screening by the Editor-in-Chief or a designated editor.

At this stage, the editor evaluates whether the manuscript:

  • Falls within the Focus and Scope of JPKI;
  • Addresses a relevant and meaningful research question;
  • Demonstrates sufficient originality and scholarly contribution;
  • Uses an appropriate and sufficiently rigorous methodology;
  • Meets fundamental standards of research and publication ethics;
  • Is presented with sufficient scientific clarity and quality;
  • Complies with relevant reporting standards; and
  • Has sufficient potential to contribute to nursing education, nursing science, clinical nursing practice, or related healthcare knowledge.
Desk Rejection: A manuscript may be rejected without external peer review when it is clearly outside the journal's scope, lacks sufficient scientific or methodological quality, does not demonstrate adequate originality, contains serious ethical or research integrity concerns, or does not meet essential journal requirements.

4. Similarity and Research Integrity Screening

Submitted manuscripts may be screened using appropriate similarity-detection software as part of the journal's research integrity procedures.

Similarity reports are interpreted by the editorial team and are not evaluated solely on the basis of a numerical similarity percentage. Editors consider the nature, extent, source, and context of overlapping material.

Where potential plagiarism, inappropriate textual overlap, duplicate publication, redundant publication, citation manipulation, data integrity concerns, or other possible breaches of publication ethics are identified, the journal may request clarification from the authors or take appropriate editorial action.

Serious concerns may result in rejection or further investigation in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement.

5. Assignment to an Editor

Manuscripts considered suitable for peer review are assigned to an editor with relevant academic or methodological expertise.

The handling editor oversees the peer-review process, including reviewer selection, assessment of reviewer reports, communication regarding revisions, and recommendations or decisions concerning the manuscript.

Editors must disclose relevant competing interests and must not handle manuscripts where personal, professional, financial, academic, collaborative, competitive, or institutional relationships could compromise, or reasonably appear to compromise, their impartiality.

When such a competing interest exists, the manuscript will be assigned to another qualified editor.

6. Selection of Peer Reviewers

The handling editor selects reviewers based on their expertise in the subject area, methodology, clinical or educational context, and other competencies relevant to the manuscript.

Reviewers should be sufficiently independent from the authors and should disclose any actual, potential, or perceived competing interests before accepting a review assignment.

The journal seeks reviewers who can provide an objective, constructive, evidence-based, and timely evaluation of the manuscript.

Reviewer selection is made by the editorial team. Suggestions of potential reviewers provided by authors, where permitted, are considered recommendations only and do not oblige the journal to invite those individuals.

7. Peer Review

Manuscripts that successfully pass initial editorial screening are subjected to peer review in accordance with the Peer Review Process of Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI).

Reviewers are asked to assess relevant aspects of the manuscript, including:

  • Originality and significance;
  • Scientific and methodological rigor;
  • Appropriateness of study design and analysis;
  • Ethical compliance;
  • Quality and transparency of reporting;
  • Validity and interpretation of findings;
  • Relevance to nursing education and/or nursing practice;
  • Contribution to existing knowledge;
  • Quality of discussion and conclusions; and
  • Overall suitability for publication in JPKI.

Peer reviewers serve in an advisory capacity to the editors. Reviewer recommendations inform editorial decision-making but do not independently determine whether a manuscript will be published.

Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of manuscripts and must not use unpublished information obtained through peer review for personal, academic, professional, or commercial advantage.

8. Editorial Decision Following Peer Review

After considering the manuscript and reviewer reports, the handling editor and/or Editor-in-Chief will make an editorial decision.

Accept The manuscript is considered suitable for publication without substantive additional revision.
Minor Revision The manuscript requires limited changes that do not substantially alter the study's methodology, interpretation, or principal conclusions.
Major Revision The manuscript requires substantial revisions to address important scientific, methodological, analytical, reporting, or interpretative concerns.
Reject The manuscript is not considered suitable for publication because of significant concerns that cannot reasonably be resolved through revision.
Final Editorial Authority: Reviewer recommendations are carefully considered; however, the final editorial decision remains the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief or authorized editor of JPKI.

9. Revision by Authors

When revision is requested, authors should carefully address the comments and recommendations provided by the editors and reviewers.

Authors are expected to submit a revised manuscript together with a clear point-by-point response explaining how each comment has been addressed.

Where authors disagree with a reviewer or editor recommendation, they may provide a reasoned, respectful, and scientifically supported explanation.

Important: A decision of Major Revision or Minor Revision does not constitute acceptance. Revised manuscripts remain subject to further editorial assessment and, where necessary, additional peer review.

10. Re-Review of Revised Manuscripts

Revised manuscripts may be evaluated by the handling editor, returned to the original reviewers, or sent to additional reviewers when further expert assessment is considered necessary.

The need for additional peer review depends on the extent and nature of the revisions and whether the scientific concerns raised during previous review rounds have been adequately addressed.

Multiple rounds of revision may be requested when necessary to ensure the scientific quality, clarity, methodological rigor, and integrity of the manuscript.

11. Final Editorial Decision

Following satisfactory completion of the peer-review and revision process, the Editor-in-Chief or authorized editor makes the final decision regarding publication.

The final decision is based on the manuscript as a whole, including its scientific quality, originality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, responses to reviewer comments, relevance to the Focus and Scope of JPKI, and contribution to nursing knowledge.

Acceptance of a manuscript indicates that it has successfully completed the journal's scientific and editorial evaluation process. However, accepted manuscripts remain subject to appropriate production and publication checks.

12. Editorial Independence and Competing Interests

All editorial decisions at JPKI must remain independent of commercial, financial, institutional, professional, or other inappropriate external influence.

Editors must not participate in decisions concerning manuscripts where they have a competing interest.

Manuscripts submitted by members of the Editorial Board, editors, or individuals with close relationships to the journal must undergo the same scientific and ethical standards as other submissions.

No Preferential Treatment: Editorial position, institutional affiliation, or relationship with JPKI does not guarantee acceptance or preferential treatment.

13. Research Ethics and Publication Integrity

Throughout the editorial process, JPKI may evaluate compliance with relevant research and publication ethics requirements.

For research involving human participants, authors must provide appropriate information regarding ethical approval or exemption and informed consent where required.

The journal may request additional documentation when necessary to clarify ethical approval, informed consent, authorship, competing interests, data integrity, funding, or other matters relevant to research integrity.

Concerns involving suspected plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate publication, inappropriate authorship, citation manipulation, peer-review manipulation, unethical research practices, or other forms of research or publication misconduct will be addressed in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement.

14. Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Editorial Process

JPKI recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies may support certain scholarly and editorial activities. However, the use of such technologies must not compromise confidentiality, editorial independence, research integrity, intellectual property rights, or the integrity of peer review.

Editors and reviewers remain responsible and accountable for their assessments, recommendations, and decisions.

Confidentiality Requirement: Confidential manuscripts, unpublished research data, reviewer reports, and other confidential editorial materials must not be uploaded to publicly accessible generative AI systems or external AI platforms that may retain, reuse, process, or disclose such content.

AI-generated assessments must not replace appropriate human editorial judgment or independent expert peer review.

15. Production and Proofreading

Following acceptance, the manuscript proceeds to the production process.

This stage may include copyediting, language and formatting checks, reference verification, layout preparation, metadata verification, and preparation of the article proof.

The corresponding author may be asked to review the proof to identify production errors and verify essential information before final publication.

Proof correction should generally be limited to errors introduced during production or other necessary corrections. Substantial changes to the scientific content of an accepted manuscript may require additional editorial consideration.

16. Publication

After completion of the production process and final editorial checks, the article is published as part of Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI).

Published articles are made openly accessible in accordance with the journal's Open Access Policy and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).

JPKI is committed to ensuring that the published version represents an accurate, transparent, and reliable part of the scholarly record.

17. Post-Publication Responsibilities

Editorial responsibility does not end when an article is published.

JPKI considers credible concerns regarding published articles and may investigate issues relating to errors, research integrity, authorship, competing interests, ethical compliance, or other matters affecting the reliability of the scholarly record.

When appropriate, the journal may publish a correction, retraction, expression of concern, or other post-publication notice.

Authors are expected to cooperate with legitimate post-publication inquiries and promptly notify the journal if they identify significant errors in their published work.

18. Appeals and Complaints

Authors may submit a reasoned appeal when they believe that an editorial decision resulted from a significant misunderstanding, factual error, or procedural concern.

An appeal should clearly explain the basis for reconsideration and provide relevant scientific or procedural justification. An appeal does not guarantee that the original editorial decision will be changed.

Complaints concerning editorial procedures, publication ethics, peer review, or other aspects of the journal's publishing process will be considered objectively and handled by an appropriate editor or institutional authority who is not directly involved in the matter whenever necessary.

19. Commitment to Fair and Rigorous Editorial Practice

Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI) is committed to maintaining an editorial process that is scientifically rigorous, ethically responsible, transparent, fair, confidential, and independent.

The journal seeks to ensure that manuscripts are evaluated according to their scholarly contribution and scientific quality while providing authors with constructive peer review and maintaining the integrity of the published scholarly record.

The editorial process is periodically reviewed and strengthened in response to developments in nursing scholarship, research integrity, peer-review practices, and international standards of scholarly publishing.

Commitment to Editorial Quality

Jurnal Pendidikan Keperawatan Indonesia (JPKI) is committed to an editorial process founded on scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical responsibility, transparency, confidentiality, fairness, and editorial independence.

Through systematic editorial assessment, expert peer review, responsible revision, production quality control, and post-publication oversight, JPKI seeks to maintain the integrity and reliability of the scholarly record and to support the advancement of nursing education, nursing science, and evidence-based nursing practice.
